Extended Dwellings

New York City Housing Authority, most known for its ‘tower in the park' typology, is undergoing change to accomodate the growing demographic needs of New York City. 

Extended Dwellings responds to the failure of this typology by calibrating the intricate balance between collectiveness and individuality.

Extended Dwellings responds to the failure of this typology by calibrating the intricate balance between collectiveness and individuality.

It stands to challenge and reinvent tower living while maintaining unit density of 306 units by addressing the 3 issues that arise from having towers in a park:

1. Units are too far from the street.
2. Units are isolated from one another.
3. Units have no sense of individuality.

 3 Scales of Shared Space:

Macro Multiplication of the ground plane for neighbourhood shared space. 

Meso Insertion of specifically programmed amenities spaces between every few levels. 

Micro Decentralization of the core to provide for small scale unit to unit shared space.

Finding the Balance Between Shared and Private Space.

These models are iterations that sought to provide sufficient light, air, and common spaces while not compromising the density of at least 300 units.
